Description

  • Foliage: Thick, succulent-like leaves with olive green and creamy white stripes on the top, and a vibrant magenta-pink underside. The pink often bleeds through to the top, giving the plant its "candy-striped" appearance.
  • Growth Habit: Unlike other trailing Tradescantia that can get "stringy," Nanouk has shorter, thicker stems that grow upright before cascading.
  • Flowers: Small, three-petaled white and yellow flowers may appear in the center of the plant under ideal light conditions.

Expert Care Guide

To keep the pink and white variegation vibrant, Nanouk needs slightly more specific care than its all-green cousins:

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light.
    • Expert Tip: If the plant starts turning mostly green, it needs more light. If the white parts of the leaves turn brown and crispy, it is getting too much direct afternoon sun.
  • Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.
    • Warning: This variety is highly susceptible to root rot. Use a pot with drainage holes and never let it sit in standing water. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as trapped moisture can cause them to rot.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix. A mix of standard indoor potting soil with extra perlite or orchid bark is ideal.
  • Humidity: Thrives in 50%+ humidity. If your home is dry, the leaf tips may turn brown. Placing it in a bright bathroom or near a humidifier works wonders.
  • Maintenance:
    • Pinching: Snap off the growing tips to encourage the plant to grow "out" rather than just "down."
    • Propagation: Simply snip a stem and stick it back into the soil; it roots almost 100% of the time.
