- Appearance: Features large, bowl-shaped flowers with recursed (swept-back) petals. The blooms are a vibrant crimson-pink with white edges and deep red "freckles."
- Size: Grows on sturdy, upright stems typically reaching 3–4 feet tall.
- Fragrance: Intensely sweet and spicy; it is one of the most fragrant flowers in the world.
- Bloom Time: Unlike Asiatic lilies that bloom early, Stargazers are "late bloomers," appearing in mid-to-late summer.
Care Instructions
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ideally, the "head" of the plant should be in the sun, while the "feet" (roots) stay cool and shaded by mulch or low-growing companion plants.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. They hate "wet feet," which causes bulb rot; planting in raised beds is a great solution for heavy clay.
- Planting: Plant bulbs 6 inches deep in either spring or fall. Space them about 8–12 inches apart to allow for air circulation.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, but never soggy.
- Maintenance:
- Deadheading: Remove faded flowers to prevent seed pod formation, but do not cut the stem until it has turned completely brown in late fall. The leaves need to gather energy for next year's bloom.
- Fertilizing: Use a high-potash fertilizer in early spring and again when buds appear.
- Staking: Because the flower heads are so heavy, tall stems may need bamboo stakes for support.
Important Warning
- Toxicity: Stargazer lilies are extremely toxic to cats. Even a small amount of pollen or vase water can cause fatal kidney failure.
