Essential Care Requirements

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun (6–8 hours daily) for the best bloom production and disease resistance. However, it is noted by Edmunds' Roses to perform reasonably well with as little as 4 hours of sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in rich, loamy, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–6.8). If planting in heavy clay or sandy soil, amend with organic compost or peat moss to improve drainage and nutrients.
  • Watering: Provide deep watering at the base of the plant once or twice a week, aiming for approximately 1 inch of water. Avoid overhead watering, as wet foliage can lead to fungal diseases like black spot or powdery mildew.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced rose-specific fertilizer (such as Espoma Rose-Tone) in early spring as new growth appears, and again after each major bloom flush through August.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Pruning: Perform heavy pruning in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Cut back the main canes to roughly 12–24 inches above the ground, and remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to improve airflow.
  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms (cutting back to a five-leaflet leaf) to encourage the plant to produce new flowers throughout the season.
  • Winter Protection: In colder climates (USDA zones 7 and below), mound 4–6 inches of mulch or soil around the base in late fall to protect the graft union from freezing.
