  • Appearance: These plants grow from corms (bulb-like structures) and produce tall, upright flower spikes reaching 3 to 5 feet in height.
  • Bloom Habit: Flowers open sequentially from the bottom of the stalk to the top, with each stem typically lasting about two weeks.
  • Varieties: Most mixes contain "Grandiflora" hybrids for large blooms, but you may also find "Nanus" (hardy miniature) or "Glamini" (compact, no-staking required) mixes.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Plant in full sun (6–8 hours daily). While they tolerate partial shade, less light leads to weaker stems and fewer blooms.
  • Planting:
    • Timing: Plant in spring once the soil warms to at least 55°F.
    • Succession Planting: For blooms all summer, plant a new batch of corms every 10–14 days until early July.
    • Depth & Spacing: Bury corms 4–6 inches deep with the pointed end facing up, spaced 4–6 inches apart.
  • Watering: Provide roughly one inch of water per week. Consistent moisture is vital during flower spike development.
  • Staking: Tall varieties often require support stakes or "hilling" (mounding soil 6 inches up the stalk) to prevent them from toppling in the wind.
  • Winter Care:
    • Zones 8–11: They can usually remain in the ground year-round.
    • Zones 7 and colder: Dig up the corms after the first frost when the foliage yellows. Cut the stems to 1–2 inches, dry them for 2–3 weeks, and store them in a cool, dark place (35–45°F).
