Plant Description

  • Flowers: Produces 4- to 5-inch wide, fully double blooms. The petals are neatly arranged, starting with a pale yellow or greenish-white center that transitions to pure white with vibrant purple "picotee" edges.
  • Size: This is a mid-sized dahlia, typically reaching 36 to 42 inches (about 3.5 feet) tall. Its more compact habit compared to dinnerplates makes it excellent for the middle of garden beds.
  • Bloom Period: A prolific bloomer from midsummer through the first frost.
  • Vase Life: Exceptional. It is a favorite for wedding bouquets and floral arrangements due to its sturdy stems and romantic color palette.

Care and Growing Instructions

  • Light: Requires full sun (6+ hours). In very hot regions, afternoon shade helps keep the delicate white petals from scorching or "bleaching" out.
  • Soil: Needs rich, well-drained soil. Dahlias hate "wet feet," so avoid low spots where water collects.
  • Planting: Plant tubers 4 to 6 inches deep once the soil reaches 60°F. Space them 18 to 24 inches apart.
  • Watering: Do not water at planting time. Once the sprouts are 6 inches tall, water deeply 2–3 times a week.
  • Feeding: Use a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer (like 5-10-10) every 4 weeks once the plant is established. Avoid high nitrogen, which causes weak stems and fewer flowers.
  • Maintenance:
    • Staking: Even though it's shorter than dinnerplates, its many blooms make it heavy. Use a tomato cage or a sturdy stake for support.
    • Pinching: Snip the center shoot when the plant is 12 inches tall to trigger more flowering branches.
    • Deadheading: Cut off old flowers regularly to keep the "Crazy Love" coming all season long.
